A lifetime is like a flash of lightning in the sky

This existence of ours is as transient as autumn clouds
To watch the birth and death of beings is like looking at the movements of a dance.
A lifetime is like a flash of lightning in the sky,
Rushing by, like a torrent down a steep mountain.
BUDDHA
One of the modern conceits that is most amusing is to take a statement like this, by the Buddha, to be a metaphorical statement, having some kind of mystical, symbolical significance, but not literally true. In fact, this statement is concise, and exactly true.

This is one of my favorite Buddhist verses of all time.
