Consequences of Teaching Lies and Abandoning Truth
By Anton on Sep 17, 2007 in Society
Yes, there is such a thing as Truth. There are a few people in the world who are teaching Truth. I’ll get to them a little further on down.
This recent article in the New York Times laments what should be at the top of every person’s agenda - for a significant number of people, life is getting much worse, and many are failing to make a good place for themselves in our society. Here are some sobering statistics from the article:
Our most reliable measures show Americans ages 35 to 54 are suffering ballooning crises:
18,249 deaths from overdoses of illicit drugs in 2004, up 550 percent per capita since 1975, according to data from the National Center for Health Statistics.
46,925 fatal accidents and suicides in 2004, leaving today’s middle-agers 30 percent more at risk for such deaths than people aged 15 to 19, according to the national center.
More than four million arrests in 2005, including one million for violent crimes, 500,000 for drugs and 650,000 for drinking-related offenses, according to the F.B.I. All told, this represented a 200 percent leap per capita in major index felonies since 1975.
What are we to make of all this? Why are so many people living in agony, suffering poverty, prison and drug addiction? Why do so many people kill themselves? Why are so many people living in ways that result in a prison sentence? This is the 21st Century, for God’s sake! What is going on?
I repeat, this is the 21st Century! During the ’60s, there were many of us coming of age who believed that we were on the cusp of a New Age in which justice, peace and happiness would prevail all across the planet. Obviously, we were terribly wrong. What has happened?
I’ll tell you at least part of the problem. Too many people bought into some kind of collectivist philosophy that seeks to bring about a utopian society through social programming and manipulation. We have watched as the “Great Society” programs of the ’60s and ’70s have not improved life, but in fact, have done inestimable damage to many populations. I think of the black family and community, for example. Now we are seeing similar depredations upon the stability of White and even Asian families. There is a big difference between a Nanny State, and a family. A family will support you, and stand by you, even if you don’t deserve it, just because you are family. The Nanny State, however, simply wants a productive citizen who stays out of trouble and pays plenty of taxes without bitching about it too much. There is little comfort in that.
But all that is really only symptomatic of a larger problem: the failure of just about all the spiritual leaders of our day to teach the truth about our place in the cosmos.
Why is it that religions, especially Judaism and Christianity, try to foist a completely nutty, batty and in fact false teaching about the relationship of humanity and the Cosmos or God? I believe it is this failure that accounts for disaffected, rebellious youth, as well as the complete breakdown of so many lives in middle age. I think these rebellious teenagers, and derelict middle agers have something in common. They are acutely sensitive to the fact that none of this life at least as most people live it, makes any sense. They feel, at some level, that they are in some kind of psycho snake pit, and that given all the facts, there just isn’t any use conforming.
What teaching is false? Try this:
- The Rapture. This is nuts. It ain’t going to happen. Period.
- Second Coming. Again, this is nuts. At least, as described by nearly all Christian cults (sects), it is completely wrong.
- That you are completely separate from the rest of the natural world.
- That there is such thing as “eternal damnation”. Or, for that matter, as “eternally going to Heaven”, at least as understood by most cults of Christianity.
What is Truth?
- Everything that exists arises from the Tao, the Original Mind, from the Ground Field of All Existence, which, one could easily, and correctly call, God.
- In this arising, there are almost an infinite number of kinds of being, not all of them visible in the realm that we humans inhabit.
- That the nature of this Tao, Original Mind and Ground Field is Light, Consciousness, Creativity and Love.
- This, fundamentally, is what we are made of. That we don’t see it, or understand it, is due to ignorance (sin).
- There is a way to live in the world that dispels ignorance, and awakens us to our true nature.
Basically, I’ve only described Buddhism. However, all traditions can be shown to have seeds of these Eternal Truths in them. If we structured out society, families and lives around these simple truths, there would be the opportunity to lessen the suffering in the world.
