 Religion and tattoos have always been associated with each other, except, that is, forReligious Tattoo Evangelical Christians.  However, this article clearly demonstrates that this has changed.

Jensen noted that when she would ask evangelical youth why they were getting tattooed, “A lot of them were like, `I have my faith and this is a very strong expression of my faith, a permanent commitment.’”

My teacher, Gloria Daniel, always used to say about tattoos and piercing, “It’s your body temple, decorate it any way you want!” 

I was very interested in the quote above.  That seems to express what I have heard others say.  I think many people feel that tattoos represent a serious commitment.  They are like a written vow, one that you have right on your very body, often where others can see it.

Our modern society is no friend to freedom.  Nor is there any transcendental meaning to be found in culture.  So people are finding ways to substantiate their mystical, spiritual and religious sentiments.

In the article, it is mentioned that originally, Christian and Jewish religious leaders prohibited tattoos because of a passage in the old testament forbidding marking or cutting the body, which is interesting given the Jewish custom of cutting off (mutilating) a portion of infant males’ penises (circumcision).
