No end in sight for Russian love affair with fur

Put together a beautiful model and a really talented coat designer, and animal skins look pretty nice. In a recent article, I saw this: “I think it would be fun to put (anti-fur campaigner) Pamela Anderson for a few weeks here in Russia, in Siberia, and see how she is going to try survive. It’s impossible,” said Natalya Turovnikova, Russian regional manager of Kopenhagen Fur, the world’s largest furrier.
In fact, you simply don’t need fur to survive, not if you are living in the developed world. Native Inuits or any other indigenous peoples, who are living as their ancestors did, perhaps have an excuse. They are living pretty much as part of the natural environment, really not separate from the animals.
But the reality in the modern world is quite different from the natural world. The reality is that we are willing to kill living beings for our pleasure and enjoyment. If you eat meat, or wear furs, you are participating in a culture of death. Observe carefully the picture here. They are electrocuting the fox by putting one lead to the nose, and the other up its ass. How humane can you get?
Here’s a picture of two foxes who are dead, and whose carcases are awaiting being skinned for their fur.
Apparently, the fur business in Russia is pretty large, about $12 Billion, according the the Reuters article.
One person in the industry had this to say,
“Look, if we lived in a country that refused to eat meat, I would be against using fur,” fur wizard and one of the evening’s designers, Igor Chapurin, said.
“If we say a person’s life is sacred, that means every single person. It should be the same for animals, not just for those we don’t eat. I’ve thought a lot about it,” said Chapurin, whose models wore sheared white mink dresses with balloon sleeves.
He’s got a point, although a somewhat weak one, in that he acknowledges the fact that he is killing to make a living. Nevertheless, the point is, we have all these really slippering values, don’t we. For example, people complain about the dolphins killed in the fishing of tuna, but no one seems to care about the tuna!
